Vital Records

The Register of Deeds office files all birth certificates for people born in Haywood County. The birth records are available beginning 1913. A certified copy of a birth certificate is $10.00.

The Register of Deeds office files all death certificates for deaths occurring Haywood County. The death records begin in 1913. A certified copy of a death certificate is $10.00.

The Register of Deeds office files all marriage certificates issued in Haywood County. The marriages begin in 1850. A certified copy of a marriage certificate is $10.00.

Who can get a copy of a vital record?

Anyone can get a copy of a vital record from our office. However, North Carolina law limits access to certified copies of vital records, which are sealed with the official seal of this office and are commonly used for identity purposes. Only the following people can get a certified copy of your birth, death, or marriage license. Certified copies of Vital records are $10

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse (currently married)
  • Sibling
  • Child or Step-Child
  • Grandchild
  • Parent/Step-Parent
  • Grandparent
  • Those seeking information for legal determination of personal or property rights
  • Authorized agent, attorney, or legal representative of the person whose certificate is being requested.

What is required to obtain a certified copy of a vital record?

REQUIRED IDENTIFICATION & DOCUMENTATION

Must provide one of the following forms for identification:

  • Valid Driver’s License or Picture ID card issued by one of the fifty US state government, the united states government, or a US territorial government (Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, or the US Virgin Islands); or
  • Valid Passport; or
  • Valid United States Armed Forces ID, or
  • Foreign ID’s will be accepted only at the discretion of the Register of Deeds based on their ability to verified.

REQUEST MADE IN PERSON

You may visit the Register of Deeds office in person to obtain a certified copy during regular business hours. The fee is $10 per certificate and you must present a valid government issued picture ID to obtain a certified copy.

OUT OF COUNTY BIRTH CERTIFICATES

You may obtain a certified copy of a birth record in other North Carolina counties if the birth occurred 1971- present. The search fee for an out of county birth record regardless of whether or not a record is located is $14.00. If in fact a record is located and you will need certified copies of said record, then an additional cost of $10.00 will be collected resulting in a total fee of $24.00.

REQUEST VIA MAIL

If you cannot visit our office you may obtain a copy by mail. If requesting a copy by mail, please send a $10 check or money order along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Haywood County Register of Deeds. In addition, the requestor must also submit a photocopy of a government issued picture ID.

BIRTH RECORDS FOR ADOPTED PERSONS

Birth Certificates of individuals who were adopted are not available at our office and are only on file at the NC State office of Vital Records. Contact North Carolina Vital Records for assistance with adoption records at (919) 733-3526.
