The Register of Deeds is the custodian and manager of a large number of public records. The public records archived in our office include: Haywood County real estate transactions, vital records (Haywood County births and deaths) and marriage licenses issued in Haywood County. We are also honored to serve our retired military by recording their form DD214 military discharges and issuing certified copies to them free of charge.

The care, maintenance and access to these public records are governed by law. It is the mission of the Haywood County Register of Deeds to record, preserve and provide access to these real estate and vital records in an efficient manner according to the North Carolina General Statutes. The Haywood County Register of Deeds staff is fully committed to providing courteous and professional service to our customers.

DEEDS (effective October 1, 2009)
G.S. 161-11.6 was added to collect a fee of
$5.00 for each deed filed. The NC Association
of Register of Deeds interprets G.S. 161-11.6 to
charge the five dollar fee on any document that
has the word “Deed” in the title of the instrument
or any document that we collect an Excise Tax
with the exception of Deeds of Trust or Mortgages.

Documents which do not meet the following standards
-presented on 8 ½ X 11” or 81/2 X 14” paper
-have a blank margin of 3”at the top of the first page
and 1/2” on remaining sides of first page
and ½”on all sides of subsequent pages
-typed or printed in black on white paper in
legible font that is not smaller than 10 points
in size
-text must be typed or printed on one side of page only
-indicates the type of instrument at the top
of the first page (below 3” margin)
-the new requirements permit blanks to be filled
in and corrections to be made by hand in pen

A document consists of multiple instruments
when it contains two or more instruments with
different legal consequences or intent, each of which
is separately executed and acknowledged and could
be recorded alone.
